Lib Dem councillors have denounced the Tory plans to introduce charges for garden waste collection, as “a massive step backwards on the road to a greener district”

The council admits that they expect a reduction of between 50-70% in the number of garden waste bins collected.

Cllr Michael Dixey said, “We will see thousands more car journeys to household waste sites, more bonfires, more fly-tipping and more garden waste going in general waste bins.

“It is incomprehensible that a council that declared a climate emergency last year should take such action. This is nothing less than a money grab on gardeners to fill glaring gaps in the council’s mismanaged budget.

The council is showing its true colours and green isn’t one of them.”
